Profiling Elizabeth Colorado Next Hot Spot For Millennials

“Quaint” and “rural” are two great descriptors for the small community of Elizabeth. But this small town of about 1,500 is starting to gain some attention from a seemingly unlikely audience. Located about an hour from Denver and an hour from Colorado Springs, Elizabeth boasts a small town feel, tight-knit community, and quieter living. And it seems that millennials are beginning to take notice.

According to the town’s website, Elizabeth began as a simple sawmill camp along the bank of Running Creek in 1855. While gold was discovered in the creek three years later, it wasn’t really enough to lead to a “boom”, however, the town remained prosperous thanks to farming, cattle ranching, and logging. Elizabeth was officially incorporated in 1890 with a population of 300 people.

Elizabeth remained prosperous a few decades, but the Great Depression and a massive flood in the 1930s caused an extended period of economic decline. It wasn’t until transportation improved in the 1960s that people realized it wasn’t much of a haul between Elizabeth and Colorado Springs to the south and Denver to the north.

Currently, most of the development happening is on the west side of town, and Elizabeth officials are focusing on thoughtful and controlled growth in their community. In addition to the close community feel, open space is another factor driving younger people to the area. Elizabeth is a contender because it gives millennials space to have land if they want it to raise chickens, goats or other livestock, as well as gardens for fresh fruits and vegetables.
